We have made a website of the wildlife round our site.
Sea otters and red deer are regulars, and dolphins and porpoises are occasional
visitors. Birds include terns, cormorants, eiders, curlews, herons, and buzzards,
and you can watch gannets diving for fish out at sea. Golden and sea eagles
occasionally fly past, and we can tell you how to find them off site. Wild flowers
include primroses, thrift, bluebells, wild thyme, self-heal, orchids, bog asphodel,
Grass of Parnassus, and flag irises. There are magnificent Scotch elms, and oaks,
alder, ash, beech, gean (wild cherry), rowan, hazel, larch and silver birch. Rocks
include basalt, the rare volcanic Craignurite (peculiar to Craignure), conglomerate,
greensand, limestone. There are many moths and butterflies, some rare, and the
enchanting coastline is rich in rock pools, shellfish and other creatures. |

You can access www.shielingwildlife.co.uk for free on your own laptop on Wi-Fi at Reception;
or borrow a CD or hard copy version on £10 refundable deposit; or hire a laptop from us
for £3 per hour. We have suggested what to see, and when and where to see it, with a
helpful map. There is a section on geology, and a check-list on which the children can
tick things off. We’d welcome contributions to the photos and database, and can refer you
to Mull wildlife tour operators on both land and sea.
